Heavy Rains Cause Overflow From Wastewater Treatment Station Into Lake Washington

King County reported a sewer overflow Friday afternoon at the Medina Pump Station as a result of heavy rainfall that exceeded the station’s capacity.

The pump station, located at NE 8th Street and 81st Avenue Northeast, is fully operational. It was designed with an emergency outfall to protect public health by directing overflows into Lake Washington instead of homes, streets, and businesses.

The overflow occurred from about 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division has notified health and regulatory agencies, will test water quality, and has posted signs at Medina Park Beach warning people to avoid contact with the water over the next several days as a precaution to protect public health.
