“I think our young kids today need African American teachers. I also feel that they need to know ancient African and American history, like where we come from and the different parts of our culture.”
Sharon Banks…
“Black role models for sure. I think that no matter what no one is doing it in this community. We still have a lot of Black on Black violence. Even if they are involved in gang related activities or whatever they should still become a role model, still reach out to our kids and say, “we might be doing this, but we want you to do better.” As far as teachers, yes, because we know how we want our Black kids to be raised and educated because generations have been deprived.”
Vernon…
I just think that we should have more Black teachers because we need more Black thought. It’s just that history is not being taught right and we just need some more Black inspiration around here.

“Yes, I do believe the public schools need more Black teachers, I believe the school district needs more Black role models, as a person of color it is easier to be able to relate to somebody of the same background as you versus people who really do not understand where you come from, your culture or everyday struggles you have to face as an African Americans, especially in today’s society and particularly in a city like Seattle which is not known for its cultural diversity in general, so this is very important.”
Mr. Football…
“I think it is extremely important that the school districts have more Black teachers and role models. It is important for young Black kids to have someone in front of them that they can identify with. Someone that can understand where we come from and the struggles we experience. I think we also need more studies of Black culture and history. But yes, I think it is very important that the school districts provide more Black teachers and role models.” (Editor’s Note: name was accidently deleted during taping our apologies.)

Yes, I think our children do need more Black teachers and role models in the publics schools. What counts is to be bold and have courage and our children can achieve whatever. It is really important that our children have someone who looks like them, so yes it is important that there are role models and teachers that are Black people
