Earlier today, Seattle City Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth was unanimously elected council president during the opening ceremony of the City Council’s meeting, which preceded the ceremonial oaths of office for newly elected members. The vote marked a significant leadership moment as the council begins its work for the new term.
“I am honored to be elected council president,” said Council President Hollingsworth. “A big thank you to my colleagues for their vote of confidence and partnership.”
Hollingsworth, who was elected to the council in 2023, represents District 3, which includes Eastlake, Montlake, Madison Park, Madison Valley, Capitol Hill, First Hill, Portage Bay, Leschi, Madrona, and the Central District. Since joining the council, Hollingsworth has become known for her focus on policy fundamentals and her ability to lead complex legislative efforts. Most notably, Hollingsworth led a yearlong process to adopt the city’s Comprehensive Plan, guiding extensive public engagement and council deliberation.
“Our council body will focus on the bold basics and fundamentals of city government, delivering clear, measurable outcomes for all Seattleites,” said Hollingsworth.
A fourth-generation Seattleite, Council President Hollingsworth was born and raised in the historic Central District. Her professional background spans education, athletics, business, and nonprofit leadership. Hollingsworth played collegiate basketball at the University of Arizona before competing professionally in Athens, Greece. After returning to Seattle, Hollingsworth earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Washington and coached basketball at Seattle University.
Hollingsworth later transitioned into the private sector, managing her family business, Hollingsworth Farms, where responsibilities included overseeing business operations. Through work with Northwest Harvest, Hollingsworth applied operational experience to advocate for solutions addressing food insecurity and expanding equitable access to food resources across Washington state.
Throughout her career, Hollingsworth has built a reputation rooted in leadership, collaboration, and community service. As council president, Hollingsworth will serve as the presiding officer of the City Council, with responsibilities that include assigning legislation to committees, setting meeting agendas, and serving as the primary point of contact for external agencies. The council president also assumes the duties of the executive branch if the mayor is absent or incapacitated. The position carries a two-year term.
Hollingsworth emphasized a leadership approach grounded in cooperation and inclusion as the council moves forward.
“Together, we will build a community that thrives on inclusivity and collaboration,” said Hollingsworth. “I am honored to serve and ready to tackle the challenges ahead with determination. Our strength lies in our diversity. Let’s harness it for positive change. I believe in transparent governance that listens to the voices of all residents. Let’s work hand in hand to create opportunities for everyone in our city. This is just the beginning. Together, we can achieve great things.”
