Freedom Through Identity, Character, And Culture

By Noni Ervin

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is more than a historical event. Freedom is the opportunity to know who you are, understand where you come from, and believe in who you can become.

For children, that journey begins with identity.

When young people see themselves reflected in stories, traditions, and examples of leadership, they develop confidence and a stronger sense of belonging. They begin to understand that they are part of something larger than themselves and that their contributions matter.

Kinara Park Kids® was created to help children and families explore values that strengthen character, family connection, and community engagement. Inspired by the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa, our educational resources encourage children to practice unity (agreement), self-determination (self-sufficiency), collective responsibility (leadership), cooperative economics (supportiveness), purpose (tenacity), creativity (innovation), and faith (confidence) in their daily lives.

These principles are not limited to one season or celebration. They provide a year-round foundation for personal growth and positive decision-making.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we honor generations who worked tirelessly to create opportunities for those who would follow. Their sacrifices opened doors that many of us walk through today. Our responsibility is to ensure that future generations are prepared to walk through even more.

Children need opportunities to learn, create, imagine, and lead. They need environments that nurture curiosity, encourage cultural understanding, and help them build healthy relationships with family and community.

At Kinara Park Kids®, we believe every child deserves access to positive cultural experiences that support both academic and social-emotional development. Through books, classroom programs, family activities, and community partnerships, we strive to create spaces where youth of all ages feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and possibility. It reminds us that progress is achieved when communities invest in their youth and pass forward the values that sustain future generations.

When children know who they are, they are better prepared to discover their purpose. When families are connected through shared values and experiences, communities become stronger. When communities invest in children, they create a future filled with hope and opportunity.

That future begins with identity, character, and culture.
