Kent Black Action Commission To Host Annual Linda Sweezer Memorial Juneteenth Festival and Celebration

Linda Sweezer

The Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC) will host their 8thAnnual Linda Sweezer Memorial Juneteenth Celebration on Sat., Jun 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. atMorrill Meadows Park located at 10600 SE 248th St. in Kent.

It has been 154 years since the word of the signing, on September 22, 1862, of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston Texas, over two and one half years after the fact, on June 19, 1865. Each year on or about June 19thcelebrations take place across the United States to remember and pay homage to that historic day, and the Black combat regiments that helped defeat the Texas militia to make this announcement possible.

The event, named in honor of longtime KBAC member Linda Sweezer, will feature food, games for children, a community dance, showcase local talent, celebrate our students, and share African American culture with the community. The Juneteenth “Concert in the Park” will be anchored once again by nationally known and Seattle’s own jazz guitarist Michael Powers. The festival will include vendors, information booths, and an Art Therapy introductory booth.

The opening ceremony will begin at 10:30 am. This is a free family friendly event with lunch provided by KBAC from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. There will be games for the children and no Juneteenth would be complete without our community dance.
