In solemn commemoration of the 49th anniversary of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a peaceful gathering will take place Tuesday, April 4 from 6:00 – 7:30 PM at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park located at 2200 Martin Luther King Jr. Way South in Seattle.
As part of the local observance of Dr. King’s death, more than twenty organizations representing government offices, faith, labor, communities of color, immigrants, refugees and civil rights advocacy groups have joined together with the Seattle MLK Committee to denounce the recent uptick in hate crimes and overt violence committed in King County, Snohomish County and the continued marginalization of African Americans in all aspects of society- even their own neighborhoods.
King County is named after Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who had a seismic impact on race relations and civil rights policies through peaceful protests until his death by assassination in 1968. Although he left the lasting legacy of securing equal rights for all people, there remains much work do to end institutional racism and overt acts of hate, even here in the progressive Pacific Northwest.
Featured speakers include leaders of sponsoring organizations who work closely with those impacted by the growing xenophobic sentiment and Reverend Dr. Samuel B. McKinney, Pastor Emeritus at Mount Zion Baptist Church will speak. Reverend McKinney he was a classmate of Dr. King’s at Morehouse College and was responsible for Dr. King’s only visit to Seattle in November, 1961.
The community is invited to participate in solidarity of peace, tolerance, equality and justice, in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. King.
