Macy Gray Hands Out Clothes, Toiletries To Refugees In Houston

HOUSTON (AP) – R&B singer Macy Gray came to Houston on Saturday with plans to take some of Hurricane Katrina’s youngest victims to a nearby amusement park. When the park was closed, she opted to go to work handing out clothes and toiletries. “I just really wanted to help out,” Gray said after spending the day in Houston’s Astrodome, which has become a temporary home for thousands who fled New Orleans. “I think the most important thing to them is their futures. They are here, and they have gotten out of that disaster, but it is like, now what? Because they can’t live like that forever.” Losing everything and going through such a traumatic storm would be scary for anybody. Gray said the images of the aftermath motivated her to fly from Los Angeles to Houston in the wee hours one morning. “It is crazy when you don’t know what is going to happen to you the next day and suddenly that is what their lives are like,” she said of the refugees. Gray, whose squeaky-scratchy voice won her a Grammy, said she was able to lift the hurricane victims’ spirits and many were excited to see her as she handed out clothing. “It is very humbling, but I loved every second of it,” Gray said. “It was really gratifying and I had a great time.”
