Mary Lee Bell Announces 2017 Mary Mahoney Scholarship Recipients

Mary Lee Bell, Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization (MPNO) Endowment Chairperson, announced that nine scholarships will be awarded to nursing student of African descent at their 68th annual Nursing Scholarship Reception on Sat., April 8 at the First AME Church – 1522 14th Ave. in Seattle.

The theme for the event is “Developing Nurses and Promoting Diversity in Health Care.”

The scholarship recipients include one male nursing student, Jameel Bhojani, who is enrolled in the BSN program at Seattle Pacific University and who is intent on becoming a nurse to provide health care and advocacy for the underserved in our community.

Other recipients include:

      Sharon Christor who is presently enrolled in an Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program while working full time at Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Center.

      Cathy Holly is presently completing her Associate Degree in Nursing at Green River College, after placing her career goal of becoming a nurse on hold while taking care of family and children.

      Amina Osman brings experience in working with Doctors Without Borders and the International Medical Corps on the Somalia border as she completes her BSN at Seattle University.

      Marquetta Posey is pursuing a BSN degree with South University and wants to provide Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing in a setting that serves the African American Community.

      Rasheda Hatcher is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Nursing at the University of Washington/Tacoma and is focused on bringing about needed change in our health care system with a major emphasis on prevention.

      Bryn Martin-Williams is completing her BSN at Seattle University and focuses on educating, encouraging and empowering patients to utilize resources that are available.

      Mimbouabe Lare is a loving mother, cancer survivor and immigrant from West African who is pursuing her dream of becoming a professional nurse by studying for her BSN at Seattle University.

      Julia Mariga was inspired by her grandmother to pursue a career that will provide the opportunity to save lives of others with severe illnesses and is studying for her BSN program at Seattle University.
