Kentlake 28, Franklin 6
The Quakers spotted Kentlake 21 points before they were finally able to shake off the first game jitters and get some momentum going. Franklin recovered a fumble in the third quarter, which led to a touchdown run by James “Duke” Scott to give the Quakers their lone touchdown for the game. Scott finished the game with 18 carries for 57 yards and one touchdown, while Franklin quarterback Lyndon Vaivao completed 4 of 8 passes for 59 yards and rushed for 26 yards on the day.
Eastside Catholic 26, Kennedy 14
Eastside Catholic quarterback Brady McKelheer threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Hoffmann as the Crusaders held a 17-0 lead over the Lancers midway through the second quarter. Kennedy would mount a comeback that saw them score 14-unasnwered points to trail Eastside 17-14 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter. The Crusaders responded with a touchdown by Masen Uribe with three minutes left in the third quarter to take a commanding 23-14 lead. Eastside Catholic would round out the scoring with a 35-yard field goal by Adam Jacobs to walk away with a 26-14 victory over the Lancers.
Seattle Prep 28, Mercer Island 14
Seattle Prep jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back as they posted a big season opening win over the Islanders.
Franklin Pierce 28, Chief Sealth 14
Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Chief Sealth battled back to tie the game at 14-14 in the third quarter. However, the Cardinals scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to hand the Seahawks an opening game loss.
King’s 48, Lincoln 23
The Lynx gave up 21 points in both the first and third quarters as they fell to the Knights 48-23.
Blanchet 38, Redmond 28
After trailing 14-10 with seven minutes left in the first half, Blanchet would score three late second quarter touchdowns and never looked back as they took a 31-14 lead heading into halftime.
West Seattle 7, Renton 6
Coming off a winning 6-3 season, the Wildcats of West Seattle, a program on the rise looked to continue their momentum from last season. Facing a 2A opponent in Renton, they’d escape with a 7-6 win as the RedHawks missed their extra point following a touchdown.
Rainier Beach 53, Lynwood 7
Despite their school being under construction the Vikings traveled north to face Lynwood. Led by Caleb Presley on the defensive end, Rainier Beach managed to go on the road in their season opener and win 53-7. They’ll face tough Metro League opponent in Seattle Prep this upcoming week.
Shorewood 41, Lakeside 30
Lakeside Lions battled their way back despite being down 41-6, they’d go on to score 24 points in the fourth quarter, yet Shorewood’s defense managed to stand firm and help secure their season opener win. Lakeside will play Chief Sealth in their first Metro League matchup of the year.
Monroe 56, Roosevelt 14
Roosevelt Roughriders began their 2022-23 season against Monroe High School, the Roughriders won their last season game 29-19 against Hanford out of Richland, Washington and looked to carry that momentum into the first game of the season. Monroe was a handful for Roosevelt, they’d go on to win 56-14, Roughriders will face rival Garfield on September 9th at Memorial Stadium.
Newport 45, Nathan Hale 0
Newport’s was too much for Nathan Hale, their defense only allowed the Raiders offense to gain 105 yards for the whole game, meanwhile offensively they scored 45 points in three out of the four quarters. Nathan Hale will face Lincoln for their first Metro League matchup.
