The Metropolitan Seattle Sickle Cell Task Force, a grass roots, community-based organization committed to helping people with Sickle Cell Disease in our local community, will host their annual Walk/Run for Sickle Cell on Sat., Sept. 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Seattle’s Seward Park.
This annual fundraiser goes towards advocacy, scholarships, the internship and the Sickle Cell summer camp. Its a great time to build connections, learn, and have some fun! The event, which will start and end at Shelter #3 at Seward Park, is a 3-mile walk or 5K run, and will feature free BBQ, information/health booths, face painting, gift bags and more.
“It is more than a walk, it is a party, a chance for us to celebrate life,” says Foxy Williams, a prominent part of the Sickle Cell Task Force. “Because each year we are mourning someone. So it is important for us all to have chances to have fun.”
Chronic pain, frequent hospitalization and a variety of other complications can be part of daily life for those living with Sickle Cell Disease. In Seattle, we are lucky enough to have powerful resources and community around this disease.
What is Sickle Cell?
It is a genetic issue that causes red blood cells to form a shape like a new moon instead of the classic doughnut shape. This can cause everything from pain events, to anemia, to premature death and a host of other issues–but is different for each person who has it. It is difficult to manage but is easier with education and a strong team of doctors and support.
In the United States about 3 million people have the genetic trait, and over 100,000 live with the disease.
Summer Camp
For four days, children ages 8-15 will be able to have fun, learn about managing their illness and find connection with people who share their struggles. It is a place where kids can just be kids and experience all the fun of summer camp without having to explain their unique challenges.
Since 1993, this annual camp allows kids to participate in activities such as boating, arts and crafts, bicycle riding, hiking, fishing and being outdoors under the direction of health care professionals knowledgeable about Sickle Cell Disease and treatment issues.
Parents who have to be constantly on guard against an emergency can breathe a sigh of relief while their kids are at camp — knowing their child is being cared for. Medical providers volunteer their time to insure their kids are taken care of in case of a crisis or any illness.
Sickle Cell Walk/Run
The cost to register for the walk/run is $40 Adults/ $20 youth (includes t-shirt). Kids 10 and under are free. For more information or to register online visit mssctf.org.
