The Franklin Quakers defeated the Garfield Bulldogs 30-7 Saturday afternoon at the Southeast Athletic Complex, completing a season sweep of the Bulldogs. After narrowly winning their first meeting 20-18 earlier this season, the Quakers pulled away in the rematch behind a 14-point second quarter that gave Franklin a commanding 22-7 halftime lead.
Henry Moore led the way for Franklin, rushing for 110 yards on 16 carries while making several game-changing plays on defense and special teams. Moore blocked a punt and came up with two crucial defensive turnovers that helped the Quakers take control of the game before halftime.
Franklin head coach Terry Green praised Moore’s performance and his contributions throughout the season.
“Big play Hen (Henry Moore) is the best player in our division! Today, in the 2nd quarter, after Mor Demba caused a fumble, he picked up and ran 76 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing possession, he picked the ball off, ran it inside the ten,” said Green. “He’s been doing this all year. He is a real humble, unassuming kid that doesn’t like the spotlight. He is special, on both sides of the ball!”
The Quakers opened the game by kicking off to the Bulldogs, and both teams got off to a defensive, penalty-filled start.
Garfield quarterback Josiah Montgomery-Irving struggled to find his rhythm early, throwing multiple incomplete passes while the Bulldogs were hurt by an ineligible receiver penalty, a false start and a fumble that they managed to recover.
Montgomery-Irving eventually connected with Jason McIntosh for a 5-yard gain, but Garfield was forced to punt.
Franklin took over and tried to establish its running game, with Moore gaining one yard and Corde Frazier adding three. However, a pass from Franklin quarterback Devion Frazier to Moore gained no yardage, leaving the Quakers short of a first down and forcing them to punt.
Garfield’s next possession also stalled after a 5-yard run by Montgomery-Irving, an incomplete pass and another false start.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt, but Moore blocked the kick, giving Franklin possession in favorable field position and setting up the game’s first touchdown.
Franklin capitalized on the opportunity, with Moore breaking off an 8-yard run and Devion Frazier adding six yards on the ground despite a holding penalty that slowed the drive.
An encroachment penalty against Garfield helped Franklin move closer to the goal line, and Moore added runs of two and four yards before Devion Frazier connected with Mor Demba Ndiaye for a 17-yard gain to set up first-and-goal at the 6-yard line.
With 2:05 remaining in the quarter, Tyrique Galloway finished the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. Franklin converted the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.
Garfield responded with its most promising drive of the quarter as Montgomery-Irving completed a 9-yard pass to LJ Jones, rushed for 10 yards himself and helped set up a 14-yard run by McIntosh.
The Bulldogs advanced to Franklin’s 22-yard line, but two consecutive incompletions and a pass to Porter Rohde that gained no yardage slowed the drive. Montgomery-Irving added a 10-yard run as the quarter came to a close, with Franklin maintaining its 8-0 lead.
Garfield carried the possession into the second quarter and quickly found the end zone.
Facing fourth-and-11, Montgomery-Irving connected with Jones for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The successful extra point cut Franklin’s lead to 8-7 with 11:54 remaining in the first half.
Franklin’s next possession ended when Garfield’s Soren Perrine intercepted a pass from Devion Frazier, giving the Bulldogs an opportunity to take the lead.
However, Garfield struggled to capitalize on the turnover. After three incomplete passes, a penalty and several short gains, the Bulldogs attempted a 43-yard field goal that Franklin’s Nico Colasurdo blocked.
The Quakers took possession, and Moore immediately broke loose for a 24-yard run. Franklin was unable to sustain the drive, however, and eventually punted the ball back to Garfield.
The Bulldogs then put together another promising possession behind runs from Anttimo Bennett and Amir Codrington, along with completions from Montgomery-Irving to Codrington and Bryan Hurd.
But a costly turnover changed the momentum of the game.
As Garfield attempted to continue its drive, Mor Demba Ndiaye forced a fumble that Moore recovered and returned 76 yards for a touchdown. Franklin converted the two-point conversion to extend its lead to 16-7 with 1:09 remaining in the first half.
Moore struck again moments later, intercepting a Montgomery-Irving pass and returning it deep into Garfield territory.
Following penalties against Garfield, Moore added a 12-yard run to move Franklin to the 3-yard line. Devion Frazier then scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds remaining.
The two-point conversion failed, but Franklin had increased its lead to 22-7.
Garfield still threatened before halftime when Rohde returned a kick 55 yards and Montgomery-Irving added a 7-yard run, but the Bulldogs were unable to score before the break.
Franklin carried its 22-7 advantage into halftime after Moore’s defensive plays helped the Quakers score 14 points in the closing minutes of the second quarter.
The third quarter began with Garfield kicking off to Franklin, but the Quakers’ opening drive was slowed by a false-start penalty and eventually ended with a punt despite strong runs from Moore.
Garfield struggled to find momentum on its next possession as Montgomery-Irving, McIntosh and Codrington were held to minimal gains, forcing another Bulldogs punt.
Franklin then put together a promising drive behind Corde Frazier, who broke off a 14-yard run before Devion Frazier completed a 5-yard pass to Mustafa Salad.
After a penalty against Garfield helped the Quakers advance, Corde Frazier added runs of four and eight yards to move Franklin deeper into Bulldogs territory.
Devion Frazier continued the drive with a 7-yard rush and an 11-yard completion to Larian Burney, bringing Franklin close to the goal line.
However, a fumble that Franklin recovered, an incomplete pass and several penalties disrupted the drive.
Despite another opportunity following a pass-interference penalty against Garfield, Franklin failed to convert on fourth down when Corde Frazier was stopped short of the first-down marker.
Garfield took over and finished the quarter with a 6-yard run by Steven Davis Baker. Neither team managed to score in the third quarter, leaving Franklin ahead 22-7 entering the final period.
Garfield opened the fourth quarter looking to build momentum as Codrington rushed for four yards and Montgomery-Irving picked up a first down with a 7-yard run.
However, the Bulldogs’ drive stalled after a loss of yardage, a quarterback sack and an incomplete pass, forcing them to punt.
Franklin took advantage of its next possession, with Corde Frazier gaining four yards before Moore broke loose for a 17-yard run.
Moore continued moving the ball with additional gains of six and seven yards, helping the Quakers advance deeper into Garfield territory.
After Devion Frazier and Moore combined for a few more yards, Corde Frazier rushed for 11 yards to set up first-and-goal at the 1-yard line.
Gus Berger finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and Franklin added a two-point conversion to extend its lead to 30-7 with 3:37 remaining.
Garfield attempted a late response as Montgomery-Irving connected with Hurd for a 17-yard gain, but an incomplete pass and a fumble that the Bulldogs recovered after losing 15 yards put the offense in a difficult position.
Montgomery-Irving was unable to make up the lost yardage, and penalties further disrupted Garfield’s final possession.
Franklin ran out the clock to secure the victory.
In addition to Moore’s performance, Corde Frazier finished with 48 rushing yards on eight carries, while Devion Frazier rushed for 16 yards and a touchdown and completed six of nine passes for 36 yards.
Franklin’s defense also received a strong performance from Colasurdo, who recorded six tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks, in addition to blocking a field goal. Moore led the Quakers with nine tackles, while Mor Demba Ndiaye and Corde Frazier each contributed five tackles, according to Franklin’s defensive statistics.
For Garfield, Montgomery-Irving rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries and completed nine of 21 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Jones caught three passes for 53 yards, including Garfield’s lone touchdown, while Codrington added 27 rushing yards on six carries.
