As April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KSARC) is taking a proactive approach to support survivors and raise awareness about sexual violence. Recognizing sexual violence as a “public health, human rights, and social justice issue,” KSARC aims to meet survivors where they are, providing guidance and resources throughout their healing journey.
To foster community engagement and education, KSARC has organized two events this month. The first event, “Navigating Justice,” is an online seminar scheduled for April 25. It will delve into the legal case outcomes of 408 sexual assault victims, shedding light on their experiences within the criminal justice system. By sharing these stories, KSARC hopes to illustrate the challenges and triumphs survivors face while seeking justice.
In addition to the online seminar, KSARC is organizing “Deconstructing Law & Order: SVU,” a public event to be held at Bellevue College on April 25. This event aims to engage the community in a conversation about the portrayal of sexual assault in popular culture and its impact on survivors. By dissecting the popular television show, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding sexual assault cases.
In a parallel effort, the City of Seattle has recently introduced a Seattle-specific version of the “Seek, then Speak” portal. This resource provides survivors with vital information about their rights and available support services. It also allows survivors to confidentially document details about the assault they experienced, should they decide to report it in the future. This innovative platform empowers survivors by offering a safe and organized space to record their experiences, ensuring that crucial information is readily accessible when needed.
The launch of the Seattle-specific “Seek, then Speak” portal is a significant step towards supporting survivors and amplifying their voices. By providing survivors with a comprehensive understanding of their rights and resources, the City of Seattle aims to encourage survivors to come forward, seek justice, and begin their healing process.
