Nyomi Bennett Receives Rainier Scholars’ Frederick Douglass Award

Nyomi Bennett and her family.

Nyomi Bennett (Cohort 18) is the recipient of The Rainier Scholars’ Frederick Douglass award, in recognition of her dedication to her own and her classmates’ education, as well her willingness to fight through obstacles with grace, wisdom and maturity.

Navigating the pathway to college graduation successfully requires hard work, commitment and sacrifice. It also takes a community.

Rainier Scholars uses a cohort model, so that students automatically belong to a community of highly motivated students who share a vision of college success. The initial phase of the program is a 14-month Academic Enrichment Phase, during which fifth-grade scholars develop the skills needed to thrive in college preparatory settings. Upon completion of that phase, the students are honored with a Rites of Passage ceremony, celebrating the scholars’ accomplishments and hard work.

Bennett, who completed the 14-months of academic enrichment through the Rainier Scholars program, is now a sixth grader at Seattle Girls’ School.
