Friendly Oscar Mitchell, Jr. was born on October 19, 1949, to the union of Friendly Oscar and Claudia Mae Mitchell. He professed his faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington, where he actively participated in various church activities.
Friendly attended Madrona Elementary, Meany Junior High, and Franklin High School. During his time at Franklin, he served as a Yell Leader, enthusiastically cheering for the Quakers. He was also a talented tenor vocalist in the Bel Cantos Choir, affording him the opportunity to travel across Europe, showcasing his singing talents within the choir.
Following his graduation, Friendly joined the United States Marine Corps and served honorably from June 1968 to May 1970, which included active duty in Vietnam. Subsequently, he embarked on his career with the City of Seattle Fire Department in 1972. Throughout his tenure, he served on Engine 33 and 40, as well as Ladders 5 and 12. Friendly was an active member of the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters. After dedicating 27 years of his life to the Fire Department, Friendly retired in 2000.
A Celebration of Life Service to honor Friendly Oscar Mitchell, Jr. will be held on Sat., Sept. 23, 2023 at Damascus International Fellowship, located at 5261 Rainier Ave. S., commencing at 11:00 a.m.
