Obituary: Renee Collette James

Renee Collette James was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 7, 1950 to parent’s Lelia Mae O’Neal and John Andrew James. Renee transitioned from this life on January 20, 2024 at the age of 73.

Renee accepted Christ at an early age at House of Israel Church on A Street in Toledo, Ohio. Renee loved the Lord and her faith was strong.

Her educational journey began at Spring Street Elementary, leading to her graduation from Woodward High School. Renee’s academic excellence earned her a scholarship to attend St. Mary’s College, where she attained her bachelor’s degree.

As a child Renee overcame a lot of difficulties, including two major eye-surgeries and an accident involving a car that injured both feet which required surgery. During her childhood, Renee resembled her mother Lelia; both were fighters. She got it honestly from both her parents.

Renee moved to Chicago in 1969, where she lived in high-rise in downtown Chicago. During her time in Chicago, she faced some challenges and quickly overcame with the help of her brother Tony and mother Lelia. Renee later returned to Toledo, Ohio to give birth to her only child Damien in November 1973. Damien was the joy in her life. In 1981, Renee and Damien moved to Los Angeles, California where her mother Lelia resided.

After moving to California, Renee at times had some personal challenges but with support from her mother and family, Renee was able to overcome and she soon recommitted her life to God, she became a member of Crenshaw Christian Center and Zoe Christian Fellowship. The Lord guided Renee back to Chicago in 1991, where she went on to reside and care for her father until his passing in 1995. Renee was adamant about family and protecting them, her son, her grandkids were her pride and joy and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Renee fought for everything that she thought was right and just. Renee’s love for reading was second to the love she had God and family.
