
Thousands of volunteers in Seattle band together citywide on Saturday to help improve their community as part of the One Seattle Day of Service. Nearly 4,000 volunteers picked up litter and garbage in an effort to beautify the local community in what supporters said was a chance to do something good and a chance to give back to their community.
Volunteers and partners responded to more than 125 events citywide from Lake City to Rainier Valley. Volunteers in Pioneer Square helped out Saturday with various projects. Some of the projects included stenciling storm drains to raise awareness that the storm drains drain directly into the Puget Sound. They also weeded and mulched the medians from Cherry Street down to Dearborn Street on first Avenue.
In addition to picking up litter, they also removed graffiti from businesses like the Interurban Building in Pioneer Square. Thousands of people participated in the day to cleanup Seattle. The Chinatown-International District was helped out with its fight against graffiti. There, volunteers fanned out to 13 sites around the CID and Little Saigon to clean up graffiti.
This is the mayor’s idea. He first announced The Seattle One Day of Service a few weeks ago. Residents were enthused jumped at the opportunity to improve their neighborhood. They say it’s a day to make a difference and a day to give back. Some theories point to better and safer communities are the result of cleanliness and actively caring be residents.
The event maybe a once a year effort. The One Day of Service includes more than 125 events from Lake City to Rainier Beach. The mayor wants this event to be an annual day for residents to give back while enjoying the results the entire year.
