People Speak: What Do You Think Is The Most Pressing Issue Facing The African American Community?

Antuon Johnson…

”My answer is the desire to do more.  Like Malcolm X said, “by any means…”, even when people say you can’t do it, you have to keep driving, you have to have that desire to do better.  You know as a people I feel like we lost that somewhere because there are some many stereotypes, some many statistics that put us down as a race, that we’ve somewhat given in to those stereotypes and statistics to the point where we sell drugs or shoot one of own kind to come up, because to society that’s has become socially acceptable. “

“I think one issue the community can begin to talk about is racism on an economic way because it covers poverty and a lot of people of color are homeless.  People of color are being mistreated and racism is the cause of this. It doesn’t matter, low income, middle class, racism can reach you. I think race relations should be the issue.”

Daniel Pak…

“I think the number one issue our communities should be talking about is love.  I feel like we have forgotten what it is to be human, we are so attached to our technology, we are so nuclear that we have forgotten that we need to be more community based.  That is the answer to racism, hatred, fear, inequity, injustice, the answer is love, it always has been for centuries. “

Erika Bell…

“I think one of the main things the black community should be focusing on is having our own, reclaiming the territories, the areas that we once occupied.  I know that affordability and sustainability are issues right now but  we need to cultivate our community and have space for brainstorming and thinking on ways to build strength in these areas, healthcare, sustainable food, banking, things like that.”

Big…

“I think the community needs to stay strong and focus on unity.  Unity has weakened over the years and you see it in the media everyday, where there’s no unity whatsoever, there’s a fake unity, people pretend their unified but underneath it’s not there and we need to grow in that area, we need to strengthen that to better ourselves not only in our communities but let it flow outside our communities and touch other people’s lives.”

Dwayne Hughes…

“I think we should have more unity amongst the African American people.  Not just locally here in Seattle but everywhere.  As a people we can far, we can do a lot, we can be very powerful.”
