Standing 5-foot-10 inches and 210 pounds, Rainier Beach running back Scottre Humphrey is a force to be reckoned with. Now in his senior year, the class of 2023 student-athlete has turned heads and become a point of emphasis for opposing teams.
Since his high school debut as freshman in 2019, Humphrey was deemed a starting linebacker and has not missed a start since.
During his sophomore and junior year as a Viking, Humphrey managed to earn four All-Metro First-Team accolades, two as a running back and two as a defensive end. In addition, he finished his junior season with 1,800 career rushing yards and 25 touchdowns.
“[Scottre] is a hard worker, who’s hard to tackle because he finishes all his runs which makes him extremely tough to bring down,” says Rainier Beach Head Football Coach Corey Sampson about his featured running back.
Last year as a junior, Humphrey helped lead the Vikings to the quarterfinals of the state 3A playoffs before losing to the eventual state champions Bellevue 56-22 and finishing the year 6-4. However, Humphrey’s impressive play caught the eyes of college coaches.
With good balance and body control, Humphrey can take a hit and keep his feet moving to extend runs for more yards whenever he has the ball in his hands. His ability to run the ball up the middle or bounce outside with a significant burst of speed, earned Humphrey his first scholarship offer from Portland State University. Following that offer, he gained interest from BYU, Eastern Washington, and Minnesota State.
Over the summer, Humphrey continued his off-season regimen working on his speed and explosiveness to prepare for his senior season. After the Vikings back-to-back wins against Lynwood and Seattle Prep earlier this season, Humphrey would receive a scholarship offer from Montana State that would ultimately change his future.
With Montana State offering Humphrey a scholarship, he made the decision to commit to Head Coach Brent Vigen and the Bobcats program just last week. The commitment to Montana State was just the beginning of a celebratory week for Humphrey and his teammates as they extended their win streak to four games after beating Garfield 21-15. During the game, Humphrey had a total of 230 yards and two touchdowns.
“My decision to commit to MSU was because it felt like home, from the coaches to the players,” said Humphrey. “I want to play with the best and I believe MSU was the place for me.”
While he is eager to begin the next chapter of his football journey next year at Montana State, Humphrey is very focused on the goals of his team this year.
“The mindset for the rest of this season is we want to run the ball and run all the way to state,” he says.
