Raisin’ In The Sun Block Party At First A.M.E.

First A.M.E. Church of Seattle (FAME), in conjunction with the Seattle Limbe Sister City Association (SLSCA), will host a “Raisin’ in the Sun Block Party” on Sat. Aug. 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the FAME Parking Lot – 1522 14th Ave. in Seattle.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature great food, face and Henna painting, bingo, a bounce house, local vendors and much more. In addition, live music featuring the Seattle Women’s Steel Pan Project and the Sambuko Marimba Ensemble will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

FAME is using this opportunity to reach out to the community surrounding the church. A number of high rise apartment and condominium buildings have been erected in recent years bringing in many new residents. Church officials see this as an opportunity to get to know their new neighbors.

The money raised through the block party will support a variety of projects of the sister city organization and the church. Among the projects benefiting from the event is the highly acclaimed work of the Sewing Sisters – an inclusive group of women and men – who are producing female hygiene kits for young women in Cameroon, Africa. The kits provide supplies that allow the young women to go to school during their periods. Without these kits girls miss up to 5 days of school each month and eventually drop out and are forced to get married. In addition to this project, SLSCA is also planning several other projects with Cameroon including provision of safe water for drinking.
