Washington State Representative Jamila Taylor, who serves the 30th Legislative District, is recovering after suffering a stroke on Tuesday afternoon. Taylor is currently in stable condition and receiving care in the intensive care unit (ICU), according to a statement from her legislative office.
At the request of her medical team, no personal visits or flower deliveries are being accepted at this time, as rest and quiet are critical to her recovery. Taylor has expressed sincere gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and colleagues. She will refrain from participating in official legislative duties until cleared by her healthcare providers.
During this year’s legislative session, which adjourned on April 27, Taylor sponsored several key bills that were signed into law by Governor Bob Ferguson. These include HB 1696, which expands eligibility and forgiveness criteria under the Covenant Homeownership Program; HB 1012, allowing the Women’s Commission to receive private and public funding; and HB 1215, which removes references to pregnancy from the natural death act’s model directive form. Additional measures include HB 1620 on parenting plan limitations, HB 1385 concerning background checks, and HB 1509 to enhance family reconciliation services.
Taylor, a Federal Way resident, was elected to the Legislature in 2020. She chairs the Civil Rights & Judiciary Committee and serves on both the Transportation and Early Learning & Human Services Committees. She also leads the Developmental Disability Advocacy Caucus, is First Vice Chair of the Members of Color Caucus, and is a member of the Legislative Black Caucus.
An attorney, youth advocate, and small business owner, Taylor holds a bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University and a law degree from the University of Oregon. Raised by a retired history professor and a former Girl Scout office administrator, Taylor has long been guided by values of education, public service, and community engagement.
The Seattle Medium and its extended family are keeping Rep. Taylor and her loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time and remain hopeful for her full and speedy recovery.
