A road rage incident took a deadly turn when a driver armed with a hammer was shot by a trooper in Everett, Washington, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on May 16 on Interstate 5 near milepost 197, as reported by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team.
The altercation began after 4 p.m. on the shoulder of the highway when the driver rammed into a vehicle belonging to a Washington State Department of Transportation contractor. Additionally, he collided with a lift that was being operated by two contractors over the slough. Eyewitnesses reported that the armed driver engaged in an altercation with the contractors and the Washington State Patrol trooper who had responded to the road rage report.
Amidst the altercation, the trooper resorted to shooting the suspect, as stated by the response team. Following the shooting, medical aid was provided to the suspect, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The identity of the deceased driver and the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. One of the contractors from the transportation agency sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident.
Authorities are actively investigating the details surrounding the road rage incident and subsequent shooting. The trooper involved in the altercation will be subject to an internal investigation, which is standard procedure in such cases.
