A 25-year-old man was taken into custody on Saturday evening following an alarming road rage incident in which he allegedly crashed his SUV into a family van carrying four people, including two young children, resulting in the vehicle catching fire.
The event occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Meridian Avenue North and North 40th Street in the Wallingford area. Upon arrival, officers discovered a severely damaged van with visible burn marks, shortly after Seattle firefighters extinguished flames that had engulfed the vehicle.
According to the Seattle Police Department, the altercation began when both vehicles reached a standstill on the narrow roadway. As the van’s driver sought to find a place to pull over, the suspect reportedly became “visibly angry,” yelling from his vehicle and gesturing wildly.
The situation escalated when the suspect made an obscene gesture towards the family and then deliberately crashed his SUV into the front of their van, causing it to lurch backward. Moments later, the van was engulfed in flames while the family remained inside. Fortunately, the two young girls, aged 7 and 10, were safely secured in booster seats in the back and all four occupants managed to escape without injuries.
After the crash, the mother urged the suspect to remain at the scene and promptly called 911. The suspect did not further engage with the family as they awaited assistance. The mother expressed her fear for her children’s safety during the incident. Police arrived to find the suspect still present, and he was arrested without incident. His SUV sustained only minor damage, while the family’s van was left heavily damaged and charred from the fire.
The man was charged with four counts of felony assault for allegedly using his vehicle as a weapon, along with additional charges for property damage. He was booked into King County Jail later that evening, and both vehicles were towed from the scene. The Seattle Police Department’s Homicide and Assault Unit is now investigating the case.
