This Weds. Jan. 27, The Seattle School Board will vote on whether or not they will enter into negotiations with Dr. Brent Jones to potentially become the interim superintendent of Seattle Public Schools.
Last Thurs Jan. 21, the School Board voted to hire an interim Superintendent to succeed Superintendent Denise Juneau, with a start date of no later than July 1, 2021.
The approval of this action item will authorize the Board President Chandra N. Hampson – who represents District 3, which includes Northeast Seattle, including Sand Point, View Ridge and Bryant — to negotiate, with the assistance of counsel, an employment contract with Dr. Jones to serve as Interim Superintendent through June 30, 2022, with a starting date no later than July 1, 2021.
According to a release by the district, the board-approved approach will allow time to conduct a formal, comprehensive search for a permanent superintendent. A formal search will be conducted starting no later than Fall 2021, continuing through winter and Spring 2022, leading to selection of a permanent superintendent by April or May 2022. The board will consider and vote on a search process for the permanent superintendent that includes considerable community engagement.
In addition, sources within the district say that Jones, if he accepts the interim position as currently outlined by the school board, will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.
Current SPS Superintendent Juneau’s contract expires on June 30, 2021. In December 2020, Juneau announced that she is not seeking renewal of her contract.
