Jamika Scott has begun serving as a Tacoma City Council Member, representing District 3, following her electoral victory in 2023.
“I am excited to start my term on the City Council and I am honored to represent the people of District 3,” said Scott. “We have tough challenges to address, particularly regarding improving community safety and creating more affordable housing, and I believe we can make progress when we use creative and collaborative approaches. I aim to bring empathy and courage to my work on the City Council so that I can foster bold actions that move us closer to the safe, healthy, and affordable city that we all know Tacoma can be. I love our city and cherish the opportunity to be a voice for my constituents.”
Born and raised in Tacoma, Scott has a wealth of experience in community organizing, service, and entrepreneurship. In 2015, she co-founded the Tacoma Action Collective, with a mission to eliminate systemic oppression and structural violence while empowering the people to build.
Scott has also been a leader in Tacoma’s vital creative economy, and she looks forward to working to expand opportunities to advance and celebrate artistic work in the city.
Scott’s leadership extends to volunteer service throughout Tacoma as well. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Grand Cinema since 2019, including serving as President of the Board of Directors from 2022 to 2023. She served on the Tacoma Arts Commission from January 2021 to December 2023 the Tacoma Public Library Foundation Board of Directors from February 2021 to March 2023. She is currently a member of the Tacoma Tree Foundation Board of Directors.
“The unique perspectives and experience in community advocacy that Council Member Scott brings will be invaluable to ensuring we are engaging every facet of our community as we address the community’s priorities,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “Additionally, with Council Member Scott’s election to the Tacoma City Council we now have seven women serving, the most ever to serve at once in Tacoma’s history.”
