Seahawks Offense Looks Impressive In 20-13 Win Over Minnesota

In their 2017 preseason home opener, the Seattle Seahawks rolled out the welcome mat for the Minnesota Vikings in front of fans with a few new toys to play with, as well as some old faces making some familiar plays.

Russell Wilson

On the opening drive, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson led the offense 77 yards connecting with a new weapon in his arsenal, but a familiar face to Northwest football fans. Local high school star and former University of Washington receiver, Kasen Williams, hauled in two big catches for 28 yards including a 1 yard touchdown catch on a goal line fade to put Seattle up 7-0. Williams, who spent the last three seasons on the Seahawks’ practice squad, has had an impressive preseason to date.

A devastating leg injury in college cost him what more than likely would’ve been a first round pick in the NFL draft. Williams’ big play potential has been on display during training camp, as he was able to show everyone what he could do last week in Los Angeles in the first preseason game going for 119 yards on 4 receptions against the Chargers.

Another familiar face was that of Doug Baldwin, who sat out last week’s game with a minor foot injury. Baldwin quickly showed why he is still Wilson’s number one outside threat as he added 4 receptions for 49 yards. Wilson also found second year tight end Nick Vannett down the middle for 32 yards and newcomer Mike Davis out of the backfield for a 22-yard touchdown, as Wilson ended his night going 13-18 for 206 yards passing and 2 touchdowns.

The Seahawks’ defense continued their relentless pursuit of the football that began last week when they were able to take the ball away from the Chargers 4 times in that game. However, it was Seattle’s special teams that caused the first turnover to start the second half and in the fourth quarter, free safety Tedric Thompson picked off Minnesota quarterback Taylor Heinicke bringing their total takeaways to six so far in the preseason.

Newly acquired kicker Blair Walsh missed a 53-yard field goal, but kicked two 52-yard field goals extending Seattle’s lead to 20-6. A late touchdown pass in the final 3 minutes of the game by Minnesota tight end Josiah Price from Heinicke made the final score 20-13 as Seattle is now 2-0 in their first two preseason games.
