A significant security incident unfolded Saturday afternoon at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), leading to delayed departures and the apprehension of one suspect. The alarming situation arose when a passenger aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 2123, operated by Horizon Air and scheduled to fly from Seattle to Walla Walla, Washington, made a “direct threat” to the safety of the aircraft around 1 p.m.
According to a spokesperson for Alaska Airlines, the threat was directed at one of the flight attendants during the taxiing phase to the runway. “Our crew members followed their procedures and secured the aircraft on a runway away from the airport,” the spokesperson explained, highlighting the airline’s commitment to maintaining safety protocols.
Upon receiving the alert, local and federal law enforcement swiftly intervened, with the FBI Seattle and the Port of Seattle Police Department responding to the scene. Authorities worked diligently to manage the situation and ensure the safety of all individuals involved. The Port of Seattle confirmed that one suspect, whose identity has yet to be released, is now in custody.
In response to the threat, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a ground stop, citing security concerns. Consequently, two runways were temporarily closed, leaving only one runway operational during the incident.
As a direct result of the security threat, Alaska Airlines reported that at least six flights were canceled, while two others were diverted to alternate locations. There were 68 passengers and four crew members aboard Flight 2123 at the time, all of whom were safely deplaned and subsequently returned to the terminal following a thorough security screening conducted by airport personnel.
Alaska Airlines stated that the aircraft involved will undergo additional security measures before being allowed to continue its operations. The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action in ensuring the safety of passengers and crew within the aviation industry.
