Mount Baker, Seattle – A fire erupted early Sunday morning, causing significant damage to a daycare facility in Seattle’s Mount Baker neighborhood. Fire crews quickly responded to the scene, ensuring that no individuals were inside the building during the incident.
The Seattle Fire Department reported that the daycare, associated with the nearby Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, was engulfed in flames that originated outside before spreading internally. Fortunately, firefighters conducted a thorough search and confirmed that there were no occupants in the daycare at the time of the fire.
The church itself, which has been closed since 2022, is part of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle’s transition after the parish ceased operations. Originally founded in 1911 to serve the Italian community, the church later adapted to cater to diverse immigrant populations, offering services in multiple languages.
Details surrounding the cause of the fire remain unclear, with no indications of suspicious activity reported prior to the incident. The fire department has initiated an investigation to determine how the blaze started.
Firefighters arrived promptly at the intersection of S. Massachusetts St. and 28th S., managing to extinguish the flames within minutes. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire. Notably, the historical main building of Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church was spared from the flames, preventing further damage to the cherished structure.
