A devastating fire ripped through an apartment building under construction in Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood early Saturday morning, spreading to a nearby home and several vehicles. The intense heat and downed power lines posed significant challenges for firefighters, who implemented a defensive strategy to combat the flames from a safe distance. While one resident escaped unharmed, precautionary evacuations were conducted in the surrounding area.
The Seattle Fire Department received reports of the fire at approximately 2:38 a.m. in the 3300 block of Claremont Ave. S. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a scene of engulfing flames, prompting an immediate upgrade to a 2-alarm fire. Over 70 firefighters, supported by eight fire engines, six ladder trucks, and multiple additional units, swiftly mobilized to combat the blaze.
The fire quickly spread to an adjacent residential home and several cars parked on the south side of the construction site. Furthermore, a utility pole at the intersection of Claremont Ave. S. and S. Walden St. sustained damage, causing power lines to fall onto the street.
Due to the hazardous conditions, firefighters prioritized safety and maintained a defensive approach, extinguishing the fire from a distance. One resident managed to escape the affected home unharmed, while precautionary evacuations were carried out in the surrounding area to ensure the safety of nearby residents.
By 3:20 a.m., the fire department gained control over the blaze, and Seattle City Light promptly disconnected the electricity supply to the area, ensuring the compromised utility pole and power lines were secure. As a precautionary measure, a fire engine will remain on-site to monitor for any potential flare-ups.
During the incident, an adult woman was assessed at the scene for smoke inhalation and is currently reported to be in stable condition. Local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed to minimize smoke exposure.
Officials have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. While one resident has been left without a home, other members of the community have been able to return to their residences following the successful containment of the fire.
