The excitement of college basketball has arrived in Seattle, as the city hosts the early rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, affectionately known as “The Big Dance.” This weekend’s event is proving to be a significant boon for local hotels, restaurants, and attractions, marking a major economic opportunity for the city.
This is the first time in a decade that Seattle has had the honor of hosting the tournament. The Climate Pledge Arena will feature a lineup of eight teams competing in first-round games on Friday, including former Pac-12 powerhouses Arizona and Oregon, alongside Maryland, Memphis, Colorado State, Grand Canyon, Akron, and Liberty. The arena is set to host a total of four thrilling games on Friday, March 21, and another two on Sunday, March 23.
Anticipation is high, with more than 18,000 fans expected to fill the arena. According to Visit Seattle, the tournament is projected to generate an impressive economic impact of approximately $13.6 million, benefiting local businesses and contributing to the city’s vibrancy. Beyond the immediate financial gains, the tournament also presents an opportunity to enhance Seattle’s national profile. Viewers will be treated to scenic shots of the city during broadcasts, showcasing its stunning natural landscape and iconic skyline as teams take to the court.
The successful bid to bring the NCAA tournament back to Seattle was a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Seattle Sports Commission in partnership with the University of Washington. Beth Knox, president and CEO of the commission, highlighted the importance of teamwork in this endeavor. “We worked closely with partners such as DSA, Visit Seattle, and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to ensure we rolled out the red carpet for the athletes, coaching staff, and the many fans who have traveled to support their teams,” Knox stated.
As the games unfold, the excitement surrounding the tournament not only elevates the local economy but also reinforces Seattle’s reputation as a vibrant hub for major sporting events. Local businesses are gearing up for a busy weekend, and the atmosphere in the city is electric, as fans come together to celebrate the spirit of college basketball.
