Pike Place Market, recognized as the top tourist destination in Seattle, has experienced a decline in visitor numbers over the past year, according to surveys conducted by The Seattle Times. Between February 2019 and February 2020, approximately 41% of the adult population visited the market, reflecting a 10% decrease in foot traffic.
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected tourism and public gatherings across the globe. Many people were hesitant to visit crowded places, and restrictions on events and gatherings led to reduced foot traffic at various attractions. As the city recovers, visitor preferences may also be evolving.
Some individuals may be seeking different types of experiences, such as outdoor activities or less crowded venues, which could explain the increased attendance at events like Seattle Storm games and the Seattle Aquarium. Local initiatives, partnerships, and community engagement efforts can play a significant role in boosting attendance at certain venues. Collaborations with schools, community organizations, and promotional events can draw in more visitors.
Other popular attractions in the city, such as Seattle Sounders games, the Pacific Science Center, the Seattle Great Wheel, events at Lumen Field, Seattle Mariners games, the Museum of Pop Culture, the Woodland Park Zoo, and the Museum of Flight, have also reported a decline in visitors compared to five years ago.
Conversely, some Seattle tourist destinations have seen an increase in attendance. The Seattle Aquarium recorded an 11% rise in visitors, while Seattle Seahawks games experienced a 15% boost. Remarkably, attendance at Seattle Storm games surged by an impressive 115% since 2020, indicating a shifting landscape in the city’s tourism and entertainment scene.
