Seattle has opened a climate portal to track the city’s Green New Deal. The Green New Deal was both a resolution passed by the city council and an executive order signed by Mayor Durkan in 2020. It has the stated goal of “making Seattle climate-pollution free by 2030.” The current mayor was a councilmember who voted in favor of the resolution.
The portal monitors Seattle’s collective progress towards achieving One Seattle Climate Justice priorities. The website states that “Seattle’s climate work is firmly rooted in the Green New Deal and the One Seattle Climate Justice Agenda.”
The portal is managed by the Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment. It is updated quarterly. The website states that the information is subject to change.
The $6.5 million proposal to reduce CO2 emissions, as previously reported by The Center Square will be tracked through the portal. The purpose of the portal as stated by the website is to “track progress towards the just transition priorities.” The site also highlights data from the city’s race and social equity index. Such data is used to show disparities that may arise in different neighborhoods.
Some of the information in the portal draw “connections between environmental and human health.” The website includes various information on tracking climate data. It is promoting the site as the ace to go to get “neighborhood-level emissions data to track progress towards healthy, sustainable, and equitable communities.”
