SIFF Feature Note: Difret

Difret

The Seattle Medium

Difret is a powerful, eye-opening film from Ethiopia that reminds us of the offensives perpetrated against women across the world. Marriage abduction seems unthinkable, but in rural Ethiopia it is tradition.  At age 14, Hirut is abducted and, in an effort to protect herself, she kills her captor.  Through a ground-breaking court case, Hirut and, her female lawyer, Meaza, battle cultural tradition and the judicial system to win equal rights for women in Ethiopia.

The Seattle International Film Festival continues through June 8.
