A heartbreaking incident occurred outside Washington Middle School in Seattle when a 12-year-old girl was struck and killed by an unattended SUV. The vehicle rolled approximately 75 yards down a gentle slope and collided with the student around 1 p.m. on Thursday, as reported by Seattle Police Department Patrol Operations Chief Todd Kibbee during a press briefing.
Initial investigations suggest that the SUV was rolling backwards after the driver failed to secure it completely in park. The driver is currently undergoing evaluation for drug and alcohol use, which is standard procedure in such cases. In the wake of this tragedy, Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones announced that the school district is providing support resources for the grieving students in grades 6 through 8 at Washington Middle School.
Mrs. Griesemer, a member of the PTSA board said, “There’s no guide for handling this situation. It’s tragic and horrific, and we are keeping the family and the vehicle owner in our thoughts and prayers.” Griesemer expressed her sorrow, recalling her connection with the girl through her own children, who attended school with her. “Her character was defined by genuine kindness,” Griesemer remarked. “She was always considerate of her family and community.”
Griesemer emphasized the community’s commitment to supporting the grieving family, noting that the PTSA has initiated an online fundraiser to assist with funeral costs. As of Sunday afternoon, the campaign has raised over $28,000.
The PTSA is also providing comfort to the school staff during this challenging time, offering snacks, coffee, and emotional support. “We are deeply saddened by this incident,” stated Jones during the news conference. “We are dedicated to providing support to both the families of the students and our staff.”
