SU serves as host school for National Black Law Students Association Convention

Congresswoman Maxine Waters of Los Angeles to deliver keynote address The National Black Law Students Association’s (NBLSA) Western Region Convention takes place in Seattle February 17-20, welcoming Los Angeles Congresswoman Maxine Waters as keynote speaker for the main event Saturday night. The Seattle University School of Law has been active in arranging the event, entitled Striving to Achieve Political and Civil Equality through the Emphasis of Higher Education. Third-year SU School of Law student Angela Rye is the director of the NBLSA western region and describes the upcoming event as a powerful learning experience.”Congresswoman Waters is dedicated to civil rights issues, having long-campaigned for affirmative action and policies promoting equality,” said Rye. “This convention will drive home the fact that higher education plays a pivotal role in achieving true diversity. It also highlights to me how dedicated SU Law is to diversity, having provided everything from shuttles for all competitors to food for all competitors and attorneys to make sure this convention is successful.” The National Black Law Students Association’s Western Region Convention will be held at the Crowne Plaza Seattle, with a series of speakers, Moot Court and Mock Trial competitions, workshops and networking opportunities with members of the legal community. SU Law will host the Moot Court and Mock Trial Preliminary Competition rounds. The finals will be held at a local Seattle courthouse. The seminars will be held at the Crowne Plaza and include “From Finals to the Firm: What Can I do with My J.D.?” and “Are We Still Mentally Enslaved?.” The convention also offers law students the opportunity to inspire youth via the community service project scheduled February 18th with Zion Preparatory Academy.For more information, contact Angela Rye at 206-852-7784 or via email at ryea@seattleu.edu.
