The Seattle King County NAACP recently announced that U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Ca) will serve as the keynote speaker for their 2017 Annual Freedom Fund Leadership Gala on Sat., Nov. 4. The event will take place at First African Methodist Episcopal Church – 1522 14th Ave. in Seattle starting at 5 p.m.
According to Rev. Carl Livingston, chair of the 2017 Freedom Fund Gala, Congresswoman Waters’ life work speaks directly to this year’s theme of “The Urgency of Now.”
Waters is considered by many to be one of the most powerful women in American politics today. The thirteen-term Congresswoman has a reputation of being a fearless and outspoken advocate for women, children, LBGTQ, people of color and the impoverished.
She is the senior most African-American woman serving in Congress and serves as ranking member of the powerful House Committee on Financial Services and is an integral member of Congressional Democratic Leadership. Congresswoman Waters serves as a member of the Steering & Policy Committee, is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and member and past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Waters has worked extremely hard in advancing civil rights through substantive legislation that increases opportunities for all people across this nation and has become widely known as a fierce advocate who won’t back down.
“It’s an incredible honor to be able to bring Congresswoman Waters back to Martin Luther King Jr. County for the NAACP Freedom Fund Gala,” said Livingston. “Congresswoman Waters had dedicated nearly four decades to public service and advancing the cause of social justice and economic inclusion for all people across our nation. We need her voice now more than ever.”
In addition to Waters, Timothy Golden, actor and author of the “Thurgood Marshall Story”, will speak briefly on the impact that Thurgood Marshall had on the NAACP.
General admission tickets for the event are $100.00 each or $800.00 per table. For tickets, contact Carl Livingston at (206) 788-7799 or Claude Burfect at (206) 719-0728.
