Why Do You Believe The Black Unemployment Rate Is On The Rise?

Kamryn:
“Something that is going wrong in the hiring process in regards to someone’s qualifications. But there could be many reasons as to why there is a rise, and I think with this new generation, they just don’t want to work and will find other ways to get their money.”
Yolanda:
“Because it can be difficult to find jobs nowadays, especially with having to be able to know what your interests are and being able to find those things. And I think sometimes it can be discouraging for the Black community when they really want to focus on one job, but they can’t find the connections or the resources to be able to find that job, or they don’t have the resources from other people to be able to get the help they need to access those jobs, industries or professions.”
Remy:
“I think that there has been a mass layoff culture, and I think that the easiest group of workers to get rid of is those workers who don’t really have that security net. And I think that Black workers are the easiest to lay off because they don’t have that. Also, with a lot of workers being Black in the government, that could also be playing into the rise.”
Jessica:
“I probably would say that there aren’t a lot of opportunities for the Black community. And then, when you do try to take on an opportunity, they don’t look at you, they move on to somebody else. Even though you may be better qualified, they still may not go with you.”
Yared:
“First thing I thought of was I feel like a lot of Black families won’t have a father. And I feel like if you don’t have the support from both parents, it is kind of hard for Black men or women to be motivated enough to go out there and do something with their life. Some just aren’t getting enough support.”
Josiah:
“There’s no specific cause for why people are unemployed. I would say, as Americans right now, the job market is pretty bad, not just as Black Americans. And as a Black person myself, it’s not easy for us to get a job compared to most people. The job market is just not good right now, and that makes it more difficult for Black Americans to get a job overall. Especially depending on where they are from, they are not going to go out and look for a job in this economy.”
