Health Department Launches Interactive Measles Exposure Map To Help Protect Public

The Washington State Department of Health has launched a new online tool that tracks public exposure sites related to measles cases across the state. The Measles Exposure Location Tracker allows residents to view, in real time, locations where people with confirmed measles have been—helping individuals determine whether they may have been exposed and what steps to take.

The map was created following a confirmed case of measles involving a traveler who passed through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on October 13. With 11 confirmed measles cases reported in Washington so far in 2025, the Department of Health said the new tool is part of a broader effort to inform the public and strengthen the state’s outbreak response.

Measles is an extremely contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, breathes, or speaks. It can remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours, posing a high risk to anyone nearby who is not immune. The virus can lead to severe complications, particularly for unvaccinated individuals and young children.

The new exposure tracker brings together data from local health departments into one centralized, mobile-friendly platform. The tool is designed to:

• Provide accurate and up-to-date information the public can trust

• Consolidate statewide exposure details to support local health departments

• Help people assess their risk and determine if they need to take preventive steps

• Improve outbreak response by allowing faster communication and preparedness

People who are not immune to measles and are exposed to the virus are at high risk of infection. Health officials say that getting vaccinated within 72 hours of exposure can greatly reduce the chances of becoming seriously ill.

“Information and vaccination are our strongest tools for preventing measles and keeping our communities safe,” said Dr. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, state health officer. “Before there is another exposure, get the best protection available against measles by making sure that you and your family are up to date on the MMR vaccine.”

The MMR vaccine remains the most effective defense against measles. State health officials are urging anyone who is unsure of their vaccination status to speak with a health care provider and get vaccinated as soon as possible.
