Washington state has recently come under scrutiny after prison officials forcibly transferred a transgender woman from a women’s facility to a men’s prison, marking an unprecedented act by the agency. Amber Kim, who had resided in the Washington Corrections Center for Women for three and a half years, was abruptly removed and relocated last week, raising concerns about the treatment of transgender individuals within the prison system.
Amber Kim’s ordeal began last Friday afternoon when she was forcibly taken from her cell and placed in waist restraints. Despite requesting to see the paperwork authorizing the transfer and contacting her lawyer, her requests were denied. Faced with the situation, she refused to comply and continue walking. In response, guards resorted to physical force, slamming her to the ground, binding her ankles and wrists, and forcing her into the back of an SUV. She was subsequently driven approximately 70 miles to Monroe Correctional Complex, a men’s prison. Upon arrival, she was placed in solitary confinement as punishment for her refusal to be transferred.
Since being confined in the men’s prison, Kim has been on a hunger strike, demanding to be transferred back to the Washington Corrections Center for Women. Speaking from solitary confinement, she expressed her fear and desperation, stating, “I’m just scared it’s gonna get a lot worse before it gets better.”
This unprecedented act by Washington state’s prison officials has raised significant concerns regarding the treatment and rights of transgender individuals within the correctional system.
