In a concerning development, a sixth suspicious letter has been sent to the Washington State Election Center. Some of the letters sent over the past week, officials said, have contained traces of fentanyl, while others have been baking soda.
Thurston County’s election center became the sixth in Washington state to receive an envelope matching the description of others containing a “suspicious white powder.” Five Washington state counties have been sent suspicious mail since the start of the general election began on Nov. 7, 2023. The recent incident of a suspicious letter being sent to the Washington State Election Center is the latest in a series of alarming occurrences.
One of the letters included the following message:
“END ELECTIONS NOW. STOP GIVING POWER TO THE RIGHT THAT THEY DON’T HAVE. WE ARE IN CHARGE NOW, AND THERE IS NO MORE NEED FOR THEM. ALSO, BE AWARE YOUR BALLOT DROPS ARE VERY SUCEPTIBLE TO NOXIOUS CHEMICALS LIKE AM/BL. THEY ARE UNSAFE TO THE PUBLIC. JUST SAYING.”
Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said he expected more suspicious envelopes, “These domestic terrorists are trying to disrupt our elections,” Hobbs said. “They’re not successful, but what they are doing is causing our elections workers to have fear, and that’s something we don’t want because they didn’t sign up for this.”
Following the previous incidents, security measures have been significantly enhanced at the Washington State Election Center. Law enforcement agencies are working closely with election officials to investigate the origin and motive behind these suspicious letters. Such measures are necessary to protect both the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of those involved in its administration.
