Brianna Thomas Files To Run For Seattle City Council Position 9

Last week, Brianna Thomas, longtime community advocate and Chief of Staff to Council President Lorena González, officially filed to run for Seattle City Council Position 9. Thomas launched her campaign in February, and quickly gained momentum with key endorsements and steady fundraising.

“I am proud of the momentum our campaign has gained over the past three months,” said Thomas. “Since launching in February, our team has attended forums, gathered Democracy Vouchers, and has been talking directly to voters about the issues most impacting them as we begin to reopen from the pandemic.” Thomas’s campaign has raised $80,000 and over 1,899 Democracy Vouchers from Seattle voters.

Thomas most recently earned the endorsement of former King County Councilmember and civil rights leader Larry Gossett. She has also earned endorsements from Teamsters Joint Council 28, Northwest Carpenters Union, National Women’s Political Caucus of WA, Women of Color in Politics, and numerous current and former elected officials, including: Seattle City Council President Lorena González, Councilmembers Lisa Herbold, Dan Strauss, and Sally Baghsaw (fmr.); State Senators Joe Nguyen (34th LD) and Rebecca Saldaña (37th LD); State Representatives David Hackney (11th LD), Liz Berry (36th LD), and Brady Walkinshaw (fmr. 43rd LD); Port of Seattle Commissioner Sam Cho; and Seattle School Board Director Zachary DeWolf.

For over a decade, Thomas has dedicated her life to public service, as an organizer, legislative staffer in the Washington State House and Senate, campaign manager, and currently as the senior advisor to the Council President. Her notable Council accomplishments include helping to establish and build the City of Seattle’s Office of Inspector General, charged with systemic review of the Seattle Police Department policies and procedures; negotiating passage of the Secure Scheduling Ordinance to create more predictable income and schedules for shift workers; negotiating passage of the Gun Safe Storage bill; and collaborating with stakeholders to negotiate the Police Accountability Ordinance and the Surveillance Ordinance.
