Central District Health And Wellness Expo To Offer Free Resources, Food And Family Activities

This Saturday, Aug. 22, the Central District Community Preservation & Development Authority (CDCPDA) will host the Community at Heart: Health & Wellness Expo, a free, family-friendly event offering health and wellness resources, fresh produce, nutrition support, self-care services and other activities at the McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development.

The expo, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McKinney Center, is being held in partnership with Fresh Start Professional Services, Food Lifeline and The IF Project and is designed to connect individuals and families with resources supporting physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Beyond the services being offered Saturday, the event also reflects CDCPDA’s broader effort to restore the McKinney Center as a community hub for education, wellness, economic opportunity and organizations serving the Central District. Fresh Start Professional Services and The IF Project are both tenants in the building, making the expo an example of how organizations based at the center can collaborate to serve the surrounding community.

That role builds on the building’s longstanding connection to Seattle’s Black community. Originally home to the Seattle Opportunities Industrialization Center, the building served as a place for creating educational and economic opportunities for Black Seattle residents during the Civil Rights era.

Today, CDCPDA is working to revitalize the McKinney Center as a place where Central District residents can gather, receive services and connect with organizations working in the community. Saturday’s expo is one part of that effort.

Attendees will have access to fresh produce, nutrition demonstrations, health and wellness resources, interactive activities, fitness and movement opportunities, mental and emotional wellness resources, giveaways and other family-friendly activities.

Self-care services will also be available, including massages and facials on a first-come, first-served basis.

The IF Project will offer a dedicated wellness experience for justice-impacted women that includes workshops addressing women’s health, healthy eating, healthy relationships and emotional wellness. Self-care opportunities, including facials and manicures, will also be available as part of the program.

Organizers say the combination of services reflects a holistic approach to health that considers physical well-being alongside nutrition, mental and emotional wellness, relationships, self-care and community connection.

The expo will also include health care providers, wellness organizations, nonprofits, small businesses, fitness professionals, wellness practitioners and other community organizations offering information about services and resources available to residents.

The Community at Heart: Health & Wellness Expo is free and open to the public Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development, 2120 S. Jackson St. in Seattle.
