Cycling in Seattle Remains High after Covid

Seattle has long been a haven for cyclists. In recent years, the city’s love affair with cycling has blossomed into a full-fledged revolution. Despite various challenges, Seattle’s cycling culture remains vibrant, with residents embracing bicycles as not just a mode of transport, but a way of life. The pandemic-era cycling upswing is still here. Portland, San Francisco and Salt Lake City are at the top for cycling.

The city has protected bike lanes. Despite the city’s hilly terrain and often unpredictable weather, cycling enthusiasts are taking to the streets in record numbers. Commuters, families, and fitness enthusiasts alike are choosing bikes over cars, contributing to a significant surge in the city’s cycling population. The sight of dedicated bike lanes, shared pathways, and bustling cyclist-friendly neighborhoods has become a hallmark of the city’s landscape. There are still neighborhoods in Seattle without protected lanes.

One of the driving forces behind Seattle’s cycling success story is its commitment to building robust cycling infrastructure. The city has invested significantly in creating a network of bike lanes, multi-use trails, and bike-sharing programs, making cycling a convenient and accessible option for residents. The implementation of projects like the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan has played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and ease of cycling across the city. The number of average daily bike trips per 1,000 people increased in the Seattle metro area from 27 to 33 between 2019 and 2022, according to new mobility data firm StreetLight Data.

There have been spikes in traffic incidents where bicyclists and pedestrians have been killed by cars and trucks. Seattle’s cycling revolution is inspiring, however, traffic congestion adds to the safety concerns and the need for continuous infrastructure improvements. Cycling advocates are working collaboratively to address these issues. Through community engagement, innovative solutions, and data-driven policies, Seattle aims to overcome obstacles and further enhance its cycling-friendly environment.

Most cycling activity is concentrated in and around big cities. A study shows that the 100 largest metros accounted for 77% of bike activity nationwide in 2022, up from 72% in 2019.
