Outcry At Florida A&M University After Appointment Of Marva Johnson As President-elect

By Opio Sokoni, SRA Wire

Florida A&M University (FAMU) alumni, students, and faculty are expressing their outrage following the Board of Trustees’ recent decision to appoint Marva Johnson, a former political appointee of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, as the university’s new leader. This appointment is pending approval by the Board of Governors on June 18.

In response, students launched an online petition on Change.org, amassing over 12,000 signatures. The Tallahassee Students for a Democratic Society have also openly condemned the selection, reflecting a broader dissatisfaction stemming from concerns about Johnson’s political background, educational experience, and alignment with FAMU’s mission.

Many within the university community voiced their concerns through petitions and viral social media posts, arguing that Johnson’s appointment could expose the HBCU to political meddling from a governor known for opposing diversity initiatives and the teaching of African American history.

During the Board of Trustees meeting, Student Government Association (SGA) President Zayla Bryant delivered a powerful closing statement that resonated with many present. “It’s essential to recognize that our significance comes from the students,” Bryant emphasized. “Understanding that had to be a question is absolutely unacceptable. The disrespect I’ve witnessed this week from candidates was astonishing, and I hope to never see that for my beloved campus.”

The selection of Johnson has sparked significant controversy, with critics highlighting her close ties to Governor DeSantis, whose administration has enacted policies that restrict education on African American history and cut funding for diversity programs. Concerns are further amplified by Johnson’s limited experience in higher education administration, raising questions about her qualifications for the position. The selection process itself has faced criticism for its lack of transparency, leading to protests and widespread discontent among the FAMU community.

Interim President Timothy Beard has called for a “smooth transition” following the Board’s 8-4 vote in favor of Johnson as President-elect. In the wake of this decision, various community members and alumni have voiced their reactions.

Despite the controversy, there remains a hope within the community that Johnson will prioritize securing funding for graduate students, faculty, programming, and campus infrastructure. The announcement of Johnson’s appointment follows a 10-month search process, during which four finalists engaged with the public. Currently, Johnson serves as the head of State Government Affairs for Charter Communications, asserting that her experience will be beneficial for FAMU amidst a challenging political climate impacting universities nationwide. Johnson’s annual salary range, as she goes into negotiations, is $450,000 to $750,000. She reportedly requested a base pay of $750,000. Her hiring is still subject to review which takes place next month.
