Summer Meals Program Returns June 24 To Help Bridge Summer Hunger Gap

By Aaron Allen, The Seattle Medium

As the school year comes to a close, organizations across King County are preparing to launch the annual Summer Meals program, which will provide free meals to children and teens from June 24 through Aug. 18.

The program is designed to help families bridge the gap that often occurs when school cafeterias close for the summer, cutting off access to breakfast and lunch programs that many students rely on during the academic year.

Supported through public funding and community partnerships, the initiative includes organizations such as United Way of King County and the Alliance for Education. The program provides free meals to young people throughout the summer without enrollment requirements or participation fees.

For many families, schools serve as more than places of learning; they are an important source of daily nutrition.

“Even when students are not in school in the summer, it’s still important to make sure that our young people have the food and resources that they need to still survive through the summer months,” said Ian Coon of the Alliance for Education. “School is a lifeline for so many and having that gap can be a challenge sometimes in getting your resources met when schools are closed in the summer. So, this is really important for families.”

One of the program’s key features is its accessibility. Students do not need to be enrolled in summer school to receive meals, and families are not required to complete additional paperwork to participate.

For students who are attending summer classes, additional support may be available through the Alliance for Education’s Right Now Needs Fund.

“The summer schools do have resources from the Alliance for Education from the Right Now Needs Fund, so they have some extra help if you are in summer school,” said Coon.

Rather than operating from a single location, the Summer Meals program utilizes schools, community centers and other neighborhood locations throughout King County. Participating sites are selected annually based on community needs and local applications, helping ensure families can access meals closer to home.

In addition to Summer Meals sites, Coon said King County relies on a multi-pronged approach to addressing food insecurity during the summer months. Families may also access mobile food pantries and grocery delivery services offered by community organizations throughout the region.

Eligible households may also qualify for Sun Bucks, a federal Summer EBT program that provides additional food benefits to families already participating in programs such as SNAP or WIC.

Coon said the program’s value extends beyond nutrition by helping young people maintain connections to safe, supportive environments during the summer months.

“I think it’s important that students have access to food security and safe places to gather year-round, especially in the summer months when school is not in session,” said Coon. “Even if you’re not in summer school, that community is still really important over the summer months.”

An interactive online map identifying meal locations is expected to be available before the program launches. Families seeking additional information about meal sites, schedules and volunteer opportunities can visit the United Way of King County website.
