The Northwest Premier Junior Football League season is underway, and the 14U Division looks to be very competitive this year as teams ramp up in search of a championship.
Parkland Raiders, Gridiron, Rise Academy, and HEIR all began their seasons with wins. Parkland, Gridiron, and Rise’s defenses made statements in their openers by holding their opponents scoreless: Parkland won 36-0 over the Renton Rangers, Gridiron dominated the NW Grizzlies 56-0, and Rise Academy staunchly secured their victory over the CD Panthers 42-0.
But games consist of two teams. The Renton Rangers, NW Grizzlies, CD Panthers, and B12 did not go down without a fight. Although the scores may not indicate it, each of these teams showed glimpses of excellence in their execution and provided their fans with individual talent and contributions.
The competition between these teams was palpable and intense. Remember, the next stop for these young athletes is high school, so their determination, grit, and competitiveness was evident as they worked to showcase both individual and team talent.
Unfortunately, in sports, there has to be a winner, and the best teams, at least this week, came out victorious. Those that were defeated can take comfort in knowing they have a whole season to improve, as the saying goes, “take it a game at a time.”
It is still a young season with plenty more football to come. Each team in this division has the potential to be successful, as all are filled with talent.
Parkland Raiders 36, Renton Rangers 0
Parkland brought a very physical game to a young and very inexperienced Renton Ranger team. But despite running up against a tough first week opponent, the Rangers got a solid performance from first year quarterback William Nienaber. Nienaber completed 3 of his 5 pass attempts on the day, including a 67 connecting with Djuan Ackers. Ackers would finish the day with two critical receptions for the Rangers. Defensively, the Rangers’ Shamarion Shavers clogged the middle and blocked a field goal.
Gridiron 56, NW Grizzlies 0
Rise Academy 42, CD Panthers 0
