Obituary Willie Earl (“Hamp”) Hampton

Willie Earl “Hamp” Hampton

March 11, 1942 – June 30, 2022

On Thursday, June 30, 2022, Willie Earl Hampton passed away peacefully at home in Seattle, Washington. He was affectionately known to his family and friends as Hamp. He will be greatly missed.

Born in Jasper County, Mississippi on March 11, 1942 to Oscar and Geraldine Hampton, Hampton moved to Seattle at the age of 3 with his mother, brother, Eddie, and sister, Hattie. He attended Bailey Gatzert Elementary School, Washington Middle School and graduated from the nationally renowned Garfield High School in 1960.

After high school, Hampton married Patricia E. Taylor in 1962. He later joined in holy matrimony to Dr. Sonja Greene Hampton in 1965, a union that lasted over 20 years. From these unions were born Shawn Earl Hampton, Regina Michelle Hampton, MD, and Christopher LeRoy Hampton. He spent his 39-year career as a trained Master Welder at The Boeing Company and also briefly lent his welding expertise to Lockheed-Martin and the Todd Shipyard.

Hampton was a true outdoorsman, as he was an avid race car driver early on, a quail and duck hunter, fisherman, and a very active golfer and marathon runner. He was a long-time member of the Esquire Club and a devoted Trustee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Renton, WA. Hampton’s true retirement love was restoring cars. In his home garage, he lovingly restored a 1964 Malibu and 1965 Fairlane.

Hampton is survived by his children, son, Shawn E. Hampton (Lynn), daughter, Regina M. Hampton Coleman, MD (Keith), and son, Christopher E. Hampton; grandsons, Jamere Hampton, Julian Coleman, and Jackson Hampton; siblings, Sarah Williams, Lori Hampton-Bolden, Lillian Hampton, Madeline Hampton, Darvin Ray Hampton, Debra Hampton, Rose Hampton-Payton; and his long-term special friend, Debra Graham; a host of nieces, nephews, and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Geraldine Hampton and Oscar (“Pops”) Hampton; his siblings Hattie Hampton, Eddie Hampton, Robert Hampton, Darleane Hughes, and Noami Hampton-Willams.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate in the name of Willie (“Hamp”) Hampton to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Renton, WA.
