Seattle Police Department Sees Spike In Officer Recruitment in 2024

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is celebrating a significant boost in officer recruitment, reporting its highest number of applicants since 2013. In 2024, the department received an impressive 4,300 applications, more than double the figure from the previous year.

This recruitment surge has led to the hiring of 84 new officers, as the SPD surpasses the number of officers leaving the force, which stood at 83 separations in the same year. Mayor Bruce Harrell hailed this “net positive staffing” as a crucial step forward for the department.

Several factors have contributed to this increase in applications. SPD officials attribute the success to a streamlined hiring process, which has reduced the wait time for applicants from 5–9 months to only 3–5 months. Additionally, the department invested $2.3 million in advertising campaigns aimed at attracting diverse recruits.

To further entice potential officers, SPD has also raised its starting wages. New recruits can now expect to earn over $100,000 annually, along with a $7,500 hiring bonus. For lateral transfers from other agencies, starting salaries are set at $116,000, accompanied by a substantial $50,000 incentive.

Interim Police Chief Sue Rahr noted in a recent press release that over 20 new officers are currently awaiting entry into the academy, with hundreds more just beginning the recruitment process. This momentum reflects a renewed commitment to building a robust and diverse police force in Seattle.
