“The Archonette’s Can!”

By Shamika RobinsonSpecial To The Medium Members of the The Archonette Club, a youth group for 14-18 year old girls sponsored by the Lambda Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, have been very busy with community service projects the last two months of the year. In October, for their community service project member of The Archonette Clubparticipated in the American Diabetes Walk. In November, they collected money and canned food goods outside of the Rainier Beach Safeway and in order to provide Thanksgiving baskets to 5 less fortunate families in our community. The group, comprised Dwanna Hines, Megan Crawford, Jasmine Garrett-Hall, Javonne Garrett-Hall, and Shamika Robinson, exceeded their our expectations, as they collected enough donations for two additional baskets. In December, the group project helped with a Santa Photo event held at the Urban League. “The women who put together the Archonette Club are not only going to help us contribute to our community, but help us through our stressful and fun high school years until we graduate,” said Archonette member Shamika robinson. “As the Archonette Club continues for the rest of our high school years, we will also continue to help our community in anyway we can and show the adults that the young people do care and also that we may be role models for the other youth out there who have been wanting to help, but did not know how.” The Archonettes want to thank the community, the Rainier Beach Safeway, and patrons for their support and generosity. The group meets once a month to plan fun events to do together and to plan their monthly community service projects. “At each of our meetings, we sing our club song “The Archonette’s Can” to the tune of Sammy Davis Jr. “Candyman”, because we know we can,” said Robinson.
