Are We Truly Free To Say And Do What We Want In America?

Enye…
Full time resident of the Central Area, if you don’t worry about the consequences you can do whatever you want in America. If you’re from priviledge even as a Black man you can do whatever you want in America, but if you’re trying to come up in America you’ll never be free. But I always tell people there is two Americas, there is White America and Black America so if you don’t let the politics of White America affect you, you can be affluent and prosperous in Black America.

Patricia…
I do not believe all people are free in America. I believe that there is a chosen privilege,  a systemic freedom that represents freedom in America and some folks are not necessarily privy to that freedom.

As an African American, no, as a Black man, no, there’s always an underlying thing, there’s always something. We can do that but then certain doors can close depending on what you say and depending on your profession, so it kind of depends on who you are, really.

Freedom is choice. We can choose to be who we want to be or say what’s on our minds if you possess the courage. Yes, the country can put pressure on individuals, judge individuals, even punish individuals, but thats where the courage comes in. We are in theory protected by the First Amendment, but when it is time to express your voice one must take advantage of that freedom.

Freddie…
We are not totally free because as a White man judges it’s a Black man’s grief. And from our last days as slaves we are still slaves.  I feel  when they say, “all men are created equal, the Black man is not seen as equal among the White man and because of that we are not capable of saying what we want to say or express our feeling without getting violated, arrested and beaten.

Chris…
We have the freedom it is what’s appeasing about America, but what you say or do and depending on who is listening or watching in todays environment can have repercussions. We possess a freedom but it comes with responsibility.
