AKA’s To Host Local Youth Summit

The Delta Upsilon Omega Chapter (DUO) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Dynamic Urban Opportunities Foundation (DUOF), the charitable giving arm of DUO, are proud to announce their upcoming S.T.E.A.M. Youth Summit. The summit, which will take place this Sat., Apr. 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Paccar Hall at the University of Washington, is designed to serve as a pathway and pipeline for college and career readiness for students in grades 6 – 12.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, in math and science-related fields, “the United States is falling behind internationally, ranking 29th in math and 22nd in science among industrialized nations.” With fewer American students excelling in math and science, and the continued need to expand arts education – a focus on enabling American students to excel in S.T.E.A.M. subjects remains a critical topic requiring immediate attention in the United States.

In response to this need, and in an effort to positively impact youth in the Puget Sound area, this free event will help drive awareness and interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematic related subjects and careers. Students will have an opportunity to interact with professionals currently working in representative S.T.E.A.M. fields – as well as participate in hands-on learning activities and workshops. TechBridge and the National Society of Black Engineers at Boeing are two of many groups that will be on-site to work with students.

Parents and guardians are also encouraged to attend the summit. They will have an opportunity to participate in a parallel program taking place in conjunction with the student activities, during which they will hear from college admissions officers, learn about educational funding, grant and scholarship opportunities, and receive information about preparing for the transitions students experience as they move from middle school, to high school, and subsequently, to college.

Additionally, a traveling museum exhibit titled, “The American History Museum, The Unspoken Truth,” will be available to tour for all in attendance.

There is no cost for the S.T.E.A.M. Youth Summit and all participants will receive a continental breakfast, hot lunch and snacks throughout the day.
